The Click is set in the future when all humans reaching the age of seventy-five experience 'the Click’ and peacefully die in their sleep; God’s (or Mother Nature's) chronological death sentence. Oliver Hitchcock, who looks to be in his late fifties, is a retired narcissistic C.I.A. operative, and lady’s man. He is also one of the lucky ones, a Beater. At seventy-eight he beat the Click and the aging process. His eleven year old grandson, Christopher, is not so lucky. Christopher is prematurely in the throes of the Click and will die within the year if Hitchcock can't save him. Christopher is a Preemie. Hitch eventually discovers ‘dissidents’ from the past who did not believe the Click was God’s (or even Nature's) way of preventing overpopulation, but rather a tool produced by the Cūtocracy, an all-powerful coalition of theocrats who, with the financial help of the Church of Ecclesia, long ago infiltrated world governments in order to legalize a politically conservative and religiously orthodox agenda. Later, as Christopher’s impending demise clicks louder and louder and precious time evaporates before Hitch’s eyes, he begins to unravel the ugly truth.
